魁夷は「荘重で華麗な自然の生命の燃焼」をどのように描いたのでしょう。この絵をよく見ると、まばゆいばかりに散り敷かれた楓の葉の上には金箔が惜しげもなく撒かれています。さらに注意して見ると、金箔の上にくすんだ黄赤色を薄く刷いている部分が見えてきます。金箔の輝きをあえて隠すことによって、複雑な調子を作り出しています。枯葉を踏んで歩くときの沈み込むような感触や、時の移ろいによる葉の色の変化をさりげなく表しているといえるでしょう。華やかな黄葉もやがて腐葉土になり、冬を越し、春の芽吹きを生み出す力になります。華麗な輝きを描きながら、自然の生命の循環という厳粛なテーマがこの作品には潜んでいます。自らの生命の燃焼も意識しつつ、「行く秋は淋しいと誰が言ったのか」と語る魁夷の静かな気迫もこの絵からは感じられます。松本猛（美術評論家、長野県信濃美術館　東山魁夷館前館長）
